University of Reading

The Whiteknights Campus at the University of Reading (UoR) is a mix of educational and business use. The Science and Technology Centre (STC) is located at the rear of the site. As a UoR framework contractor, we were selected to work on this scheme.

The building, approximately 30 years old is formed from four blocks (A–D), with a central lightwell and atrium. The building is of concrete frame and predominately clad in brick with some curtain walling. The majority of the building is four storeys high with plant space on top. Block D has an inset third storey.

The scope of works varied across different areas of the building. Refurbishment was carried out in some areas with limited decoration and flooring. Other areas required a complete strip out of non-structural partitions and the refitting of the space. The delivery requirement was to provide hospital grade counselling, treatment, office and meeting rooms.

The project required a phased completion with a non-negotiated deadline and was delivered collaboratively, and – despite some complications – completed satisfactorily on time.
