The Eton College Upper Club (1st XI Cricket) pavilion, based in an attractive Victorian building, was outdated and too small for modern sports requirements. With new design by architects Edgingtons, a contemporary but sympathetic extension attached to the existing building was proposed.
The purpose-built pavilion extension was raised via a series of steel pedestals (due to flood plain policy) with the structure gently curved through 30° to face the cricket square. The building included viewing galleries, seating areas, scoring box, umpire facilities, players’ changing facilities and clubroom.
The construction featured brick cavity walling, exposed white epoxy coated steelwork and areas of bespoke glass cladding together with roof lights. An aesthetically designed feature was made in the formation of raised verandas to view the sports pitches and activity areas. This modern building within the college conservation area sits perfectly with the older buildings around it
