The Corn Exchange in Wallingford was erected in 1856 but has been substantially modified since then; the Grade II listed building was converted into a theatre in 1975 and further altered in 1988. Opened in 1978 by Sir Peter Hall, the building provides a 176-seat auditorium venue for both theatre and cinema productions, with Dolby® DIGITAL Surround Sound and digital projection.
We were appointed to carry out extensive renovations, repairs and modifications – The Corn Exchange has undergone refurbishments to the front of house and provides disabled facilities, a new bar and box office and foyer area in addition to meeting rooms and lecture facilities for local community use. The updating and refurbishment works also comprised remedial roof works, including the replacement of lined glazing with a new insulated zinc roof finish as well as strengthening existing roof structure and replacement gantries for theatre lighting. We have also improved heating, ventilation and air conditioning installations. Our joinery division delivered bespoke carpentry and seating refurbishments/fitout.
Other works covered electrical rewiring, lighting and redecorations to the foyer and public space.
