This new build free standing block was the second phase of a planned scheme to increase the teaching space at St Anthony’s Catholic Primary School due to the the rise in the local population.
The phased works comprised the offsite construction of four new classrooms in a single storey timber framed block, that was externally rendered with a five degree metal composite panel roof. It included an entrance atrium, toilets, office and support room – complete with hard and soft external landscaping.
While construction took place within a live educational environment, the works had to be carefully planned in order to minimise disruption, while ensuring that safety was of the utmost priority for pupils, teaching staff and visitors during the build programme. With site access via a narrow residential street and through the school premises, a clear traffic management plan was established to minimise the impact on the local community and the day-to-day running of the school’s activities. As the site was located within a residential area, careful daily monitoring of dust and noise levels ensured that disruption and inconvenience was minimised.
In addition, the insufficient depth of the existing foul drainage resulted in the installation of a pumping chamber during the works. As the site was within a residential area, noise and dust levels were carefully monitored and reduced – mitigated in part through the pre-fabricated nature of the building and overall reduction in the construction programme. While a BREEAM rating was not a Client requirement, the scheme achieved an EPC ‘A’ rating, which fully satisfied Building Control.
