Founded in the UK in the 1950s, SSS Gears are the sole global manufacturer of SSS Clutches – and the world’s leading supplier of automatic overrunning clutches for high power/high speed applications in power generation, marine propulsion and general industrial plant. With offices and manufacturing plant both in the UK and USA, the facility at Park Road currently employs 43 staff.
We were appointed as main contractors to undertake an extensive phased redevelopment of the 1970s site, boarded by an adjoining Business Park, residential properties, car parks and public highways.
The existing facility comprised a brick office building and an original steel frame warehouse building, located at the front of the site. The roof was constructed using two layers of corrugated asbestos sheeting and internal plasterboard panels.
Enabling works commenced in November 2019. Phase 1 of the works required access to neighbouring properties during the construction of a retaining wall of the new unit. This required a carefully managed and controlled segregation between pedestrians and site vehicular to provide a safe environment for both public and staff.
The project site area covered four key buildings within a busy manufacturing location. The design and planning for site activities, especially temporary and statutory works, access and egress to the working areas, were thoroughly reviewed and co-ordinated to minimise disturbance and nuisance to those working at SSS Gears, residents and businesses in adjacent properties.
The new build works comprised construction of a new portal framed manufacturing unit. We also completed replacement of an asbestos roof and refurbishment of the manufacturing facility and offices, with a remodelled entrance.
In addition to the upgrades and improvements to the manufacturing facilities, an office extension provided new and updated staff facilities, with full height steel and glass atrium with suspended steel staircase. We have also delivered improvements to the parking layout. Carefully planned phased works allowed Client’s business operations to continue as normal throughout the construction period.
This project was successfully completed in March 2023.
