The new building replaced an outdated nursery attached to St Marys School and is within the grounds, but with a separate entrance and parking, special segregation of pedestrian access and security measures are built in. The Client required a fast track approach with earliest completion and a system built Tek-Haus timber panel frame was chosen, reducing wet trades to only floor screeding which incorporated full under floor heating.
Works consisted of traditional concrete slab foundation with edge beams to support the single storey structure, which was timber clad. The roof was completed with an interlocking roof tile. Room layouts were carefully planned to give secure and inspiring areas for children and staff, with much use of bright colours and soft finishes. The building contains a special room for mothers and babies, staff meeting and administration rooms, toilet and changing areas.
Externally there are protected areas under sail-shaped awnings and soft paved areas with toys are provided under cover. Childcare, health and family support are also provided within the nursery. The buildings services and finishes are designed to be user friendly, with low maintenance and many sustainability measures built in. Security measures are highly developed in this sensitive environment. The building was completed on time and within budget.
